Public Dharma Talk by Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche
"Do you like to be happy – Yes or No?" This is the question posed at a public Dharma talk by Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche during his 2010 visit to Toronto. Simple to answer and easy to put into practice, says this Tibetan Monk and living master of the Baron Kagyu Lineage – "It’s all just common sense."
Sponsored by a small group of devoted students, Chokyi Nyima visited Toronto for three days in July, 2010, to engage private evenings with supporters of this lineage and present teachings on Compassion & Enlightened Mind at the Riwoche Temple. Also, public Dharma talks were held at the Metro Convention Centre and the University of Toronto Multifaith Centre, the latter of which is captured in this video.
As instructed by the 16th Karmapa, the spiritual leader of Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, Chokyi Nyima has worked tirelessly to introduce Dharma to westerners and spread the teachings of the Buddha internationally. He acknowledges the importance of online Dharma talks in this mission. He has taught westerners since 1977 and, in 1981, founded the Rangjung Yeshe Institute for Buddhist Studies. He later established Rangjung Yeshe Publications, which has produced many commentaries and transcripts of his teachings. Today, he tours extensively and provides online Buddhist studies through the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery in Nepal, where westerners are also welcome to learn in residence.
In this talk, he speaks to the relevance of Buddhist teachings in dealing with the challenges of these modern times: "Buddhist teachings are based on common sense, Buddhist teachings are based on common logic, Buddhist teachings are based on common need."
